Church Can
Drive
Surpasses Goal for
“Souper Bowl Challenge”

The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre
held a “Souper Bowl Challenge” to benefit the
Pierre/Fort Pierre Food Pantry.
Church and community members
were asked to donate cans of food
to assist citizens that need help
meeting their grocery needs in the area.
The church had a goal of gathering
at least 300 cans of soup
and they surpassed the goal,
collecting nearly 500 cans.
Out of our Archives

This morning the familiar tones of the old bell
rang out from the new bell tower.
After six months rest it ought to be in good voice.
The bell has an interesting history
& has been in service here for forty-nine years.
It was made by McShane and Company of Baltimore,
still important bell-makers.
It cost, free on board, Baltimore $167.57
and transported to Pierre and installed in the old church
tower,
the total cost was $280.15.
The ancient record shows with fidelity
just how this sum was produced.
The Broom Brigade, a mysterious organization,
the genesis,
methods or fate of which are not recorded,
produced $72.90;
citizens donated $78.00; a basket festival produced $47.00.
An oyster supper augmented the fund by $68.25
& Mr. W. G. Poor, blest be his memory-he was never a member
of the church-
generously contributed $14.00
to supply the deficiency.
Other than this generous actthere is no record
and pioneers
consulted can’t recall his residence in Pierre.
In
1840
the Reverend Stephen Return Riggs
left behind the security of a safe life in the east
to travel to
South Dakota, serving as a missionary
of the American Home
Missionary Society
to witness Christ’s love
to the Indians
around Pierre & Ft. Pierre.
The Reverend William B.
Williams
and his wife of Mondovi, Wisconsin,
served as the first
pastor
to those who were moving to Ft. Pierre & Pierre
Even through extreme cold
the
congregation worshipped
in a tent,
‘having services that were well patronized
by both saint and
sinner.’
